Heritage Trust North West appoints Purcell Architecture
A new team is in place to start initial planning for the restoration of Grade I listed Baguley Hall in Wythenshawe.
Heritage Trust North West (external link) (opens in new tab) (HTNW) has appointed Purcell Architecture (external link) (opens in new tab)to start work on proposals for the revival of this historic gem.
Baguley Hall was acquired by HTNW at the end of last year. Now HTNW is setting up a project team thanks to a £79k grant from Architectural Heritage Fund.
Michael Guy, Chief Executive HTNW, said: “We are delighted to appoint Purcell as lead on the initial development plans for Baguley Hall. Purcell has a brilliant track record and its ethos is very much aligned with ours. We will now seek to work with local communities to develop proposals for the future use of the Hall, including plans for public access.”
For almost 80 years Purcell has lead exemplary architecture, masterplanning and heritage consultancy to protect, enhance, and evolve the world’s most significant historic buildings and places
Tom Brigden, Partner at Purcell and project lead said: ”We are really excited to be working with Heritage Trust North West on the first stage of works to the Grade I listed Baguley Hall.
“This project will bring public access back to this hidden gem, including the fourteenth century timber framed Great Hall, one of Greater Manchester's most significant historic buildings.”
In November Historic England selected HTNW to take on ownership of Baguley Hall. The preservation trust has been saving and conserving buildings since 1978.
The medieval manor house dates to the late 13th Century and is one of Manchester’s oldest buildings. But it has been boarded-up for almost six decades and in recent years threatened with demolition.
Baguley Hall is a medieval timber-framed hall - regarded as one of the oldest and finest surviving examples in the North-West.
