Intern

ClerkenwellInternship£27,008 pro rataApplication deadline: 07/06/2026, 23:59
Get hands-on, in-depth experience of the heritage sector and nationwide campaigning with a paid internship at SAVE (external link) (opens in new tab) (https://www.savebritainsheritage.org/).
This is a rare opportunity to take up a paid work experience role in the sector. It is for anyone who has not previously had a paid heritage job but who intends to seek a career in the sector. They welcome applications from all suitable candidates regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, socio-economic background and belief. They particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups.
Working with their Conservation Officer, you will gain experience of heritage advocacy, including commenting on planning applications and assisting in research and analysis for current campaigns. You will work with their Heritage Engagement Manager on their national Buildings at Risk register and supporting SAVE’s volunteers. You will also support the rest of the team on everything from social media to events.
Previous interns have gone on to jobs in amenity societies, heritage consultancy and building surveying. Commenting on the kind of experience you can expect, a previous intern, Eve, said: “The internship at SAVE is extraordinary – I’d say there’s a lot of learning on the job, so you’re given very exciting work straight off the bat. The SAVE team have been wonderful. I am exceptionally grateful for my time here, and cannot recommend the internship enough.”
Whether you have recently completed your studies or are looking to change careers, you will have a genuine enthusiasm for historic architecture as well as a general understanding of how the planning system can protect it. With support from their small, friendly and collaborative team, you’ll work independently, take ownership of tasks and deliver to tight deadlines. The work is varied, busy and requires flexibility. Communication, across all forms of media, is at the heart of what they do and you will need to be ready to pick up this skill quickly. You will either be a graduate in planning, architectural history, history, architecture, law or other related discipline or have gained professional experience in a sector outside the historic built environment.
To apply, please send your CV and a covering letter setting out why you would like this position with SAVE, how you qualify and also where you heard about the position to Leigh Stanford at: administrator@savebritainsheritage.org (mailto:administrator@savebritainsheritage.org)
Interviews will take place on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd June 2026 at their offices.
Please note that applications will be assessed on a rolling basis and they reserve the right to close the application process early if they receive a high number of applications. Therefore, early applications are encouraged.
They will be holding a short, informal webinar to talk about the role and give you the opportunity to ask questions on Tuesday 28th April 2026 at 5pm. To sign up for the webinar or for any questions about the role, please contact Amy Popham, Heritage Engagement Manager, at: amy.popham@savebritainsheritage.org (mailto:amy.popham@savebritainsheritage.org).
